“Understanding Man’s Mobility through time provides the key to unlocking the questions for the future of humanity.” this was are starting premise.

My role was Senior Designer leading a small team designing the concept to detail design for Act 1. The challenge was how to design the ramp and the internal enclosure to suspend disbelief and immerse the visitors into the experience, seamlessly flowing between three acts over multiple levels. We used the ramps to connect the visitors movement through the experience with the content of mobility from the past and present to future. We worked with many very talented teams including WETA workshop, Barker Langham, Electrosonic and Magnopus.

Having joined the project at tender stage. I worked through the shop drawing and fabrication phases up to site completion. This project was done with MET Studio Design.

Using the ubiquitous rain of Singapore as a means to take people back in time, through theatrical techniques, the rain reverses, taking you back in time from today, back 700 years. This starting sequence primes you as a visitor for the following 5 act sequence that takes you through the key eras of Singapore history, through a historical show experience.

This was done working with MET Studio.

The type of clientele the centre is aimed at are potential clients from government departments, university researchers, professors and students. The building is within a new science park, clean modern, without significant feature, a lot of natural light with a distant, empty feeling. From the clientele type and the site the approach is for active engagement in processes and personalized, accessible information to takeaway. 

The solution is to provide a a highly flexible spatial program, with multiple configurations, allowing for exhibition visits, workshop days, group presentations and lab activity. The space and aesthetics seamlessly integrate together.

The greatest challenge was co-ordinating the design with all          stake-holders spread over three separate time zones. The           centre-piece a faceted glass touch screen table, was totally asymetric requiring a high level of accuracy in Design then construction, as no two apexs of the form sit at the same level.

The type of clientele the centre is aimed at are Carlsberg Executives, local government and the plant’s employees. The brewery is a new-build two years prior but requiring a significant re-fit. The plant is defined by a 350 metre long corridor connecting all parts of the plant, creating a very elongated space, from start to the end of the visitor journey. The mixture of employee and visitor users dictated a cross-over of user journey encompassing brand heritage, brewery overview, key performance indicators and actual live data analysis of different areas of the brewery displayed in exhibition format.

The type of clientele the centre is aimed at are  from government departments, university researchers, professors and students. The space is the first floor of a three storey building with two further floors of offices for the same company. The outer walls are full height glass allowing alot of natural light into the space. A predominantly screen based space, ambient light needs to be creatively managed. Tactility is required to juxtapose with  the clean aesthetic of the adjacent spaces to invite interest, interaction and to contextualize the space. The approach taken was coined ‘African fractal’. Technological exhibits presented in an engaging interactive screen based approach, utilizing a consistent language of pattern, colour and material. Informal pod elements were created as a hub for workshops similar in form to tribal huts but flexible, allowing multiple configurations and ambient light control, reducing glare for the majority of the space.

The users expected were civil servants, suppliers and journalists. The space is in the Abu Dhabi exhibition centre, a 180 sqm. lot facing the entrance. The insight we worked with was
‘Exhibition fatigue’, repetitive information formats and stand design in general, which inhibit user interaction. The concept was for a visually stimulating and colourful canopy covering  an information lounge, allowing guests to meander under the canopy and be gently introduced to static and on-screen content in the relaxed setting of a lounge. The main challenge was in value engineering the stand, in particular the ceiling form, reducing the numbers of suspended banners. The stand was successful and was the most popular in the exhibition.

The target audience are industry journalists and potential suppliers who are typically male. The space for the drone launch is in Central station NYC.

Pro-level users require a less-hands on experience with more features and facts explained. Public users require a much broader hands-on approach, opening up the user to it’s potential uses.

The main challenge of the projects were budgetary as the US is much more expensive than working in Asia.

As new approaches require significant confidence to be generated in the oil industry, an inclusive collaborative experience should be created to engage potential customers. The event context requires a more thoughtful design, which will draw attention above the usual hi-impact visual approach employed by competing stands within the space. ‘Pragmatic problem solving, where all good ideas unfold as they develop from a single thought.’ Like paper unfolding the design language adopts this as a metaphorical motif for the wealth of innovation that goes on within the clients company and the potential therefore for breakthrough ideas in the  field of energy efficiency.

Appealing to the growing startup film industry, the site is in a former factory floor. The concept is within the theatre prior to the lights being switched on. The sensation that occupants and guests are entering an event waiting to happen. A creative space that will elevate the business occupants offer. The solution was to embrace parts of the previous industrial features and install bespoke ‘studio quality' spaces and features to sell in to startup film professionals.

Within the story, a make believe environment where tall tales are told.

This project was done working free-lance.

The mall is pitched at luxury and mid-market brand customers.          The space is defined by two pods of seven floors connected diagonally forming an elongated s-shape. The connection of the two pods is the defining feature of the space. The space is defined by a 40m across by 180m long faceted undulating ceiling striking in white and accent illumination.  All subsequent forms within the space are derived from this large ceiling feature, such as reception desks and other furniture items. The ceiling was a detailing challenge, as it has to interface between the curtain wall capping detail, different M+E requirements along the ceiling and significant changes in height for the ceiling along its entire span.

This project was done working with Benoy.

To appeal to the international business traveller. A prestigious site, set in one of nine contemporary blocks designed by Hopkins Architects in grey granite stone, next to the Dubai Stock Exchange building. Appealing to the luxury business traveller and to suite the contemporary architectural language, a minimal Middle Eastern approach would suite the context. The solution was to contextualize the wholly contemporary approach and design with a subtle geometric motif and form that interpreted the traditional Arab Mashrabiya geometery, 
We interpreted this with a  contemporary pallette of luxurious and unusual materials. The main challenge of the project was to manage the budget to match the clients 7-star aspiration, regarding the quality and often uniqueness of the materials we specified. Also the hotel operators high standards for material performance meant alot of research into materials, testing stains, impact etc.

This project was done working with Woods Bagot.

The project is for a woman who’s children have left home. The space is in a 300 year old cottage which has already had appropriate contemporary alterations in different parts of the property previously. The owner would like to have bedroom accommodation for  two couples to be able to stay and also this would render the property more marketable in the future when selling. The proposed scene picks up on particular colours  regularly worn by the occupant and  the birch faced plywood was used as a sympathetic juxtaposition to the existing cottage aesthetic.

Part of winning pitch team for the outdoor and indoor scope for a vast 10 year anniversary celebration for the Venetian hotel and casino in Macau. To re-establish the casino in regard to entertainment reputation a theatrically choreographed external event was proposed with elevating stage and opera singer. Whilst inside the interior was set to hold a 100metre long LED scree, water pools and multiple performers to entertain guests during dinner.
